Planning

This site is primarily about our outback trip in September 2009.

… the pre-planning and a place to publish photo and updates on the trip as we go.

The initial route looks like this:

Sept 2009 Map-sm

The route will see the two of us head north through Mildura to Menindee Lakes, camping the first night at Lake Cawndilla in Kinchega National park.

Day 2 From there we will head north, through Broken Hill and up the silver city hwy to Milparinka. (We will leave exploring Broken Hill and surroundings to another trip as it is somewhat closer to home than most of this trip.) We plan to camp at Depot Glen established by the explorer Charles Sturt, not far out of Milparinka.

Day 3 Will see us heading north again – not far to travel as there will be plenty to explore, from Milparinka through Tibooburra and on the Cameron Corner. Tonight we camp at Fort Grey another of Sturt’s old camps.

Day 4 We will head into South Australia and up to Innaminka. At this stage the plan is to use the bore track which runs from Bollards lagoon up parrallel to the SA/ Qld border. Depending on road conditions when we are there … we may go through Merty Merty and up the Strzelecki Track. Tonight we camp on Cullymulla water hole. (Out of Innaminka).

Day 5/6 We will explore around Innaminka before heading through the Moomba gas fields to Walkers Crossing on Cooper Creek, We’ll camp the night somewhere along the creek before continuing on the Birdsville the next day. We are not driving large distances these days as we want some time to explore both Innaminka and Birdsville as well as have time to enjoy this desert country.

Day 7 We’ll head out to the edge of the Simpson Desert to take a look at big red, before heading north for Boulia. One day we’ll come back and do the Simpson crossing, but I think one vehicle with trailer, one adult and a 12 year old boy… is probably verging on reckless rather than adventurous so unfortunately that adventure will have to wait.

Days 8/9 Will see us travelling the Plenty Highway heading for Alice Springs to meet the rest of the family who fly in today (Day 9). The most likely camping looks like the Marshall River at Jervois or somewhere closer to the old Hart’s Range Police Station.

Days 10 – 13 Will see us based in Alice Springs, exploring the town and its surrounds – and doing day trips to the Eastern McDonnell’s and south of the Alice. We’ll also stock up on food and catch up washing etc before heading out again. (Booked)

Day 14 We’ll head west exploring the many wonders of this area and camping the night at Redbank Gorge.

Day 15 Will see more exploration of this area before spending the night at Finke Gorge.

Day 16/17 We will travel the Mereenie loop road, staying 2 nights at  Kings Canyon.

Day 18/19 We will travel to Ayers Rock camp ground and spend 2 nights there, exploring the Olga’s and “The Rock” (Booked)

Day 20 We hit the road again – heading east then south following the old Gunbarrel Highway to Kulgera where we will camp the night.

Day 21 We continue to move east, passing through Finke and Mount Dare before camping at Dalhousie Springs

Day 22 We head down through Oodnadatta and follow the track down Camping either at William Creek or Coward Springs.

Day 23 We follow the Oodnadatta track south to Marree where we turn north and head in to Muloorina Station to hopefully view Lake Eyre with water in it.

Day 24 We travel south to the Town of Hawker in the Flinders Ranges.

Day 25 We move on to Renmark

Day 26 We make the final dash home.
