Spare Parts List

The list of spares needed for a trip will obviously vary depending on the vehicle and how remote the destination.  It’s important for the traveller to remember that the more weight the vehicle is carrying, the more likely you are to break something.

My list is broken into 3 parts:

  • Resources
  • Tools.
  • Parts.

Resources:

All the spare parts and tools in the world will not help you if you do not have the knowledge to use them (or cannot find someone who does.)  For that reason high on my list are some key resources:

  • Workshop manual
  • Suitable communications gear – (HF radio or satphone)

Tools:

General:

  • Tarp
  • Socket set
  • Shifters – large and small
  • Assorted spanners – to suit the vehicle. (ring and open enders)
  • Vice grips
  • Small pipe wrench
  • Pliers – standard and long nose
  • Side cutters
  • Wire stripper – Crimper
  • Screw drivers – Philips head and straight in small and larger sizes
  • Ballpein Hammer
  • Heavier hammer – mash hammer or similar
  • Wire brush
  • File
  • Stanley knife or similar
  • Hacksaw or similar
  • Tyre levers
  • Tyre repair kit (and the knowledge to use it)
  • Compressor
  • Jack – preferably additional to the standard vehicle jack
  • Jacking plate
  • Grease gun
  • Axe
  • Shovel
  • A Torch
  • Multimeter
  • Jumper leads

Vehicle specific:

  • Nanocom electronic diagnostic tool.
  • Any special tools like fan or hub spanners

Parts:

General:

  • Fluids – Engine oil, diff oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, water
  • Spare length of generic heater hose and a spare length of fuel hose
  • Spare hose clamps
  • Tire Repair Kit
  • Spare electrical cable
  • Fuses- all sizes used in the car
  • Relays
  • Spare globes
  • Electrical Tape
  • Duct tape
  • Cable ties
  • CRC,WD40 or similar
  • Radiator sealant
  • Muffler tape
  • Epoxy ribbon
  • Fencing wire
  • Assorted nuts, bolts, screws etc to suit vehicle.
  • Possibly water pump or fuel pump kit – depending on the vehicle
  • Clear plastic sheet for emergency window
  • For petrol vehicles – spark plugs and leads, distributor cap coil and rotor button

Vehicle specific:

  • Rear drive shaft “doughnut”
  • Crank position sensor
  • Filters – Air, oil, fuel
  • Belts – spares of all belts on the vehicle
  • Hoses – spares of all main hoses.
  • Thermostat.
  • Tires – at least 2 spares
  • Tire tube (to suit above- even if they are tubeless tires)
  • Trailer wheel bearing kit
